TL;DR Press Word Herd 2024

The TL;DR Press 1k Word Herd competition was one of my favourite writing experiences this year! TL;DR Press provides unique prompts to every writer, and all proceeds go to charity. My prompts this time around were entimologist and movie poster, and I was all in. My story took 3rd place overall, and received some lovely comments from the judges:

TL;DR Word Herd judge feedback:

Judge 1: Is Sexy-Kafka an existing sub genre? Beautifully written. Every line sings and carries so much emotional weight. The bug metaphors work so well as an allegory for the slowly failing relationship. This story is so good. The story of a relationship breakdown told in such an engaging, visceral way. I loved every line. The author expertly references the prompts through the whole piece in a way that feels subtle and natural. The prompts are used, “movie poster” feels more overtly obvious, but is still clever and referential to the whole piece. Using the bug dreams as the narrative driver is so clever and fun.

Judge 2: I loved this piece. The dreams were fantastic, and they did a good job of using the metaphors to tell a difficult story. Delightfully weird and with a lovely note at the end to tie it all up. My favorite kind of strange!
